Ghost Net Removal
Ghost nets refer to abandoned, lost, or discarded fishing gear that continues to drift in the ocean, posing serious threats to marine life and habitats. These nets can entangle marine species, damage coral reefs, and persist in the environment for years due to their durable synthetic materials. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO, 2016), ghost gear is a significant component of marine debris and a major contributor to ocean pollution.
Objectives :
- Remove ghost nets from marine environments to prevent further harm
- Reduce entanglement and mortality of marine species
- Protect and restore coral reef and benthic habitats
- Support long-term marine ecosystem health
- Raise awareness about sustainable fishing practices
Ghost nets continue to “fish” long after they are lost, causing unnecessary and prolonged damage to marine ecosystems. By removing them, we actively reduce threats to biodiversity, improve habitat conditions, and support the recovery of affected ecosystems. This effort is essential for maintaining healthy oceans, especially in areas where marine life and human activities closely interact.
