The Snakehead Cowrie (Monetaria caputserpentis) is a small, striking sea snail species belonging to the family Cypraeidae, widely distributed across the warm intertidal waters of the Indo-West Pacific.
Unique Morphology & Appearance
Growing to about 1 to 1.5 inches in size, it features a distinctively flattened, oval shell with rich chocolate-brown margins and a top surface densely peppered with white or cream-colored spots—a patterned appearance that closely mirrors the scales on a serpent’s head. When active, the snail extends a semi-translucent, brownish mantle covered in tiny branching projections called papillae; this mantle fully wraps around the shell, constantly polishing it and keeping it free of algae and debris.
Natural Habitat
In its natural habitat, the Snakehead Cowrie clings to wave-swept reef crests, rocky tide pools, and hidden crevices where its hydrodynamic shape protects it against strong currents.
Aquarium Care & Diet
As a primarily nocturnal herbivore, it comes out under the cover of darkness to graze on film algae, macroalgae, and organic detritus. While popular among marine aquarists for its unique aesthetics and algae-eating habits, it requires an established tank with abundant natural rock growth and should be kept with caution, as large adults whose food sources run low may occasionally nip at soft corals or sponges.
